Sewing "That Suitcase" Together

Over the years since this bag was designed there have been a number of ways to complete the final construction.

The very first version, made for the Tilda Jubilee collection, was handsewn into the outer case, making for sore fingers and fears of stitches coming apart.

The most recent version has skimmed too quickly over the "how to" part of putting it together and for that I apologise.

If you're having trouble with the final steps of the suitcase, I hope that this set of pics and instructions will set you on the path to a finished bag.

Here goes!

  1. Pin the flat outer bags sections right sides together with the zippered loop ( base attached to long zippered section ).
It helps to have halfway marks on the flat sections and the loop ( specifically the base part of the loop) to help pin it in evenly.

Sew with the flat bag outer on the machine bed, go slow around the corners, stopping and pivoting with the foot up and needle down when you need to get around corners.
Repeat with the other bag outer.

2. Open the zipper if needed and pull the lining up so you can pin it to the flat lining sections just as you did with the outer sections in step 1.

Leave yourself an opening in the bag base along just one lining section seam. ( around 6 inches should be big enough to pull the bag through.)
3. Once both linings are sewn your bag will be inside out and look like a suitcase ( but not the right way out!)
Put your hand inside the bag base section opening and pull as much bag through as you can. Now turn the bag the right way out through the unsewn section in the base.
Here is the bag right way out showing its lining and turning opening.

4. Sew up the opening and you bag is finished!
